Denmark Work Visa from Pakistan 2026: New Pay Limit, Positive List & Fees
Denmark has quietly become one of the more realistic Nordic options for skilled Pakistani professionals — but 2026 brought higher salary bars and refreshed job lists. If you are weighing Denmark against Sweden or the Netherlands, here is where the rules actually stand as of August 2026.
The Pay Limit Scheme threshold rose to DKK 552,000
Denmark's flagship route for non-EU workers is the Pay Limit Scheme (Beløbsordningen). It has no job-list restriction: if a Danish employer offers you a salary above the threshold on Danish terms, you can apply. From January 2026 that threshold is DKK 552,000 per year — roughly DKK 46,000 a month before tax — up by DKK 38,000 on the previous year.
There is also a Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme at DKK 446,000 per year, but it carries stricter conditions: the vacancy must have been publicly advertised, and it only opens when Danish unemployment stays below a set level. Treat it as a secondary option, not a shortcut.
The Positive Lists were updated on 1 July 2026
If your offered salary sits below the pay limit, the Positive Lists are the alternative. Denmark maintains two: one for people with a higher education and one for skilled work. Both were refreshed on 1 July 2026, with the higher-education list carrying roughly 164 job titles. Occupations move on and off these lists twice a year — on 1 January and 1 July — so a title that qualified last year may not qualify today.
On a Positive List permit your salary does not need to beat DKK 552,000, but it must match Danish standards for that occupation. SIRI checks this against published wage statistics, which were themselves updated in August 2026. This is where many applications fail: the job title is listed, but the salary is below the Danish benchmark for it.
Fees and processing times
SIRI charges a case-processing fee for work permit applications — reported for 2026 in the region of DKK 6,000 to DKK 6,900 depending on the scheme, and normally paid by the employer. Accompanying family members are charged separately, around DKK 3,080 per person. Fee figures change with each Danish finance act, so confirm the exact amount on nyidanmark.dk before paying.
On timing, SIRI's published service standard for Pay Limit and Fast-track work permits remains around one month. Extension applications are slower — currently quoted at about four months, including for family members. Missing documents can add one to two months.
How Pakistani applicants actually apply
- Secure the job offer first. Denmark has no job-seeker visa comparable to Germany's Opportunity Card or Portugal's job-seeker visa. The contract comes before the permit.
- Confirm which scheme fits — Pay Limit, Supplementary Pay Limit, or a Positive List entry matching your exact job title.
- Employer signs Part 2 of the online application on nyidanmark.dk and pays the SIRI fee.
- Attest and translate your documents. Degrees need HEC attestation and MOFA/Apostille; Urdu documents need certified English translation.
- Record biometrics. Denmark's applications in Pakistan are handled through VFS Global, with biometrics captured in Islamabad. Applicants outside Islamabad pay a small mandatory courier charge (around EUR 2 / PKR 641) to return documents to regional centres.
What to watch next
A new collective-agreement-based scheme is expected, which would let employers covered by Danish collective agreements recruit from a fixed list of non-EU countries at a lower salary threshold, under strict compliance rules. Whether Pakistan appears on that country list has not been confirmed — do not build a plan around it yet.
