Ireland Work Permit from Pakistan: New 2026 Salary Thresholds Explained
Ireland has quietly become one of the more realistic European destinations for skilled Pakistani workers — but the bar moved on 1 March 2026, when minimum salary thresholds rose across every employment permit category. If you are weighing a move to Dublin, Cork or Galway, the numbers below decide whether your job offer qualifies at all.
Two permits that matter most
Ireland issues several employment permits, but Pakistani applicants realistically compete for two. The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) covers occupations on Ireland’s Critical Skills Occupations List — registered nurses and midwives, doctors, radiographers and other allied health professionals, software and cloud engineers, cybersecurity and data specialists, and civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It requires no Labour Market Needs Test, allows family reunification sooner, and leads towards long-term residence. The General Employment Permit (GEP) covers a much wider range of roles, but your employer must first advertise the vacancy and show that no EEA candidate was available.
The new salary floors from 1 March 2026
From 1 March 2026 the CSEP minimum rose from €38,000 to €40,904 for applicants holding a relevant degree. Applicants relying on experience instead of a degree face a far higher floor of €68,911. Recent graduates in critical-skills occupations who qualified within the previous twelve months may be accepted at €36,848. The General Employment Permit minimum moved from €34,000 to €36,605. These are floors, not typical salaries — an offer below them will not be approved however strong your CV, and the Irish government has confirmed that thresholds will keep rising in stages over the next few years.
Fees and realistic timelines
The employment permit fee is €1,000 for a permit of up to 24 months, with a reduced fee for shorter permits. In most cases the employer pays it. Processing at the Department of Enterprise has recently run around five to six weeks for a complete CSEP application and closer to nine to eleven weeks for a General Employment Permit, though published times move with application volume. For a GEP, add the Labour Market Needs Test advertising period before the application can even be filed. Realistically, budget three to five months from signed job offer to permit in hand.
The permit is only step one
A common and expensive misunderstanding: the employment permit is not a visa. Pakistani nationals must also obtain a long-stay ‘D’ employment visa, submitted through the AVATS portal and lodged at a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. That stage commonly adds another eight to twelve weeks. Who has the strongest case in 2026
Healthcare is the clearest route. Ireland continues to recruit nurses and allied health professionals actively, and Pakistani nursing qualifications are widely recognised subject to NMBI registration. ICT remains viable but is more competitive than it was two years ago, and the higher graduate floor has pushed some junior offers out of range.
