UK Skilled Worker Visa 2026: The £41,700 Threshold & Degree-Level Rule, Explained for Pakistanis

Published July 20, 2026 · by Hijrat — visa consultants, Islamabad & Rawalpindi

The UK's Skilled Worker route — the main path for Pakistani professionals moving to Britain with a job offer — looks very different from the route many applicants remember. Since 22 July 2025, the general salary threshold has been £41,700 and, for most new applicants, only degree-level (RQF Level 6) jobs qualify. Around 180 job categories were removed from eligibility in one stroke, so the first question in 2026 is no longer "can I find a sponsor?" but "does my job still qualify?"

The two tests every offer must pass

First, the job itself must be on the list of eligible degree-level occupations sponsored by a licensed UK employer. Second, the salary must meet the higher of the general threshold (£41,700) and the "going rate" set for that specific occupation. A £41,700 offer is only enough if the going rate for your job is at or below that figure — many IT, engineering and finance roles carry higher going rates.

Exceptions that still help Pakistani applicants

Not everyone needs £41,700. Health and care professionals on national pay scales can qualify from around £25,000, "new entrants" (typically under 26, recent graduates or those switching from a Student visa) from around £33,400, and shortage roles on the temporary lists attract discounts. People already on the route before the rules changed benefit from transitional arrangements — extensions lodged before 1 December 2026 may still be assessed against a lower £31,300 threshold. The care worker route, however, has been closed to new overseas applicants.

What this means if you are applying from Pakistan

  1. Check your occupation code first — if the role is below RQF 6, the sponsor cannot fix that with a higher salary.
  2. Confirm the going rate for the exact occupation code, not just the £41,700 figure.
  3. Budget realistically: visa fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge and an English test (usually IELTS UKVI) add hundreds of thousands of rupees.
  4. Get degrees and experience letters properly attested and any Urdu documents certified-translated before the sponsor files.
  5. Be wary of "guaranteed UK work visa" offers — sponsorship is employer-led, and the UK refused around 44% of Pakistani visitor applications in 2025, so weak files carry real cost.

If a UK employer is genuinely interested, the route remains workable — salaries in shortage sectors have adjusted, and transitional rules protect many existing visa holders. Our team can review an offer against the current rules through our visa services, and students weighing alternatives can compare the UK Student visa route.
