Ireland has become a favourite for Pakistani students — English-taught degrees, strong technology and pharmaceutical job markets, and a well-known post-study stay option. Approval rates for genuine students have been high, but the financial and document checks are strict. Here is the 2026 guide.
The visa you need
For courses longer than three months, most Pakistani students apply for the Irish long-stay ‘D’ study visa. Your course must appear on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP). After you arrive, you register with immigration for permission to stay — full-time students are usually granted Stamp 2, which also allows limited part-time work.
The money you must show
This is where most applications succeed or fail. You generally need to show around €10,000 for living costs for one academic year (with a minimum of about €7,000), on top of paying or showing your tuition fees. Use clear, steady bank statements — yours or a sponsor’s — plus a sponsorship letter and proof of relationship where relevant. A sudden lump-sum deposit with no history is a common red flag for visa officers.
English and academic requirements
Most universities ask for IELTS around 6.0 overall, with no individual band below 5.5, though exact requirements vary by course and level. You will also need your academic transcripts and degrees, properly attested and, where required, translated.
The process, step by step
- Get admission. Secure a Letter of Acceptance from an ILEP-listed institution and pay the required tuition deposit.
- Prepare funds and documents. Arrange bank statements, sponsor letters, IELTS and attested academics.
- Apply online (AVATS). Submit your application up to three months before travel and pay the €60 visa fee.
- Biometrics & documents. Provide your passport and supporting papers, then wait for a decision.
Processing time and success rate
Expect roughly 4–8 weeks, and up to 10–12 weeks in peak season — so apply as early as you can. For genuine, well-documented Pakistani applicants the approval rate has been very high in 2026 intakes, but a weak or unexplained financial trail remains the most common reason for refusal.
