Spain Work Visa from Pakistan 2026: Process, Fees and Requirements

Spain has quietly become one of the more realistic European work destinations for Pakistani applicants — and one of the most misunderstood. There is no application you can simply file yourself from Islamabad. Everything begins with a Spanish employer. Here is how the route actually works in 2026, what the new rules changed, and what it costs.

The process starts with your employer, not with you

Spain does not issue a work visa on the strength of a CV. A company registered in Spain must first apply to the provincial immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) for an initial residence and work authorisation in your name. Only once that authorisation is approved can you lodge a national (Type D) visa application through the Spanish visa application centre in Pakistan. What the new Spanish rules changed

Spain’s new immigration regulation, Royal Decree 1155/2024, has been in force since May 2025 and reshaped the system. Initial residence and work authorisations are now generally issued for one year, while renewals can be granted for up to four years — a real gain in stability once you are inside the system. A dedicated chapter was created for seasonal work, and the collective hiring route (GECCO) still allows employers to process batches of at least ten workers at once, mostly in agriculture.

Processing is faster where your job appears on the Catálogo de Ocupaciones de Difícil Cobertura — the shortage-occupation list published quarterly by Spain’s employment service, SEPE. If your occupation is on it, the employer does not have to prove that no Spanish or EU candidate was available. Be realistic: the list is narrower than most people expect, leaning heavily towards maritime crews, professional sport and a small set of skilled trades. Check the current quarter’s list before building a plan around it.

Documents Pakistani applicants need

1. Passport valid well beyond the intended stay, with blank pages.
2. The approved Spanish work authorisation and your signed employment contract.
3. A police character certificate covering recent years of residence, properly attested.
4. Degrees, diplomas and trade certificates, attested and legalised for use in Spain.
5. A medical certificate confirming you carry no disease with public-health implications under the International Health Regulations.
6. Certified Spanish translations of any document not already in Spanish.
7. Passport photographs, the completed national visa form, and travel or medical insurance.

Fees and processing times

The Spanish national visa fee is generally quoted at €90 for adult applicants, payable in rupees at the rate applied on the day, plus the visa centre’s own service charge. The employer-side authorisation carries separate Spanish government fees, normally paid in Spain. In practice, expect the employer’s authorisation stage to take several weeks to a few months, with the consular visa stage adding roughly two to four weeks in normal conditions. Both the fee and the service charge change with exchange rates and policy — confirm them on the day you book.

Where to apply in Pakistan

Spanish visa applications in Pakistan are handled through the outsourced Spain Visa Application Centre network in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The Islamabad centre relocated in July 2026, so confirm the current address before travelling for an appointment. After arriving in Spain you have a short window — normally one month — to apply for your TIE residence card and register with social security.
