Japan Visit Visa from Pakistan 2026: Fees After the July Hike, Documents & Processing Time
Japan has become one of the most-asked-about destinations for Pakistani travellers — for cherry-blossom tourism, family visits and short business trips. Two things changed the picture in 2026: Japan revised its visa fees for the first time since 1978 (effective 1 July 2026), and all ordinary applications in Pakistan now go through the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global / Gerry's rather than the Embassy desk. Here is what Pakistani applicants in Islamabad and Rawalpindi need to know.
Where to apply: Islamabad or Karachi
Since 1 April 2024 the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad no longer accepts ordinary visa applications directly (only diplomatic and official passports). Tourists, family visitors and business travellers must book an appointment and submit at the Japan Visa Application Centre. Residents of Sindh and Balochistan apply in Karachi, under the Consulate-General of Japan; applicants from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, KP, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan normally apply in Islamabad.
You cannot submit an application if your intended travel date is more than 90 days after your submission date, so do not apply too early.
Japan visa fees for Pakistanis in 2026
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised visa issuance fees for applications accepted on or after 1 July 2026 — to roughly ¥15,000 for a single-entry visa and ¥30,000 for a multiple-entry visa (previously ¥3,000 and ¥6,000). However, MOFA notes that fees may not be required depending on nationality, and the Japan Visa Application Centre in Pakistan currently states that Pakistani passport holders are exempt from the visa fee.
What you will pay in practice is the centre's service charge of about PKR 3,500 (US$12.5), paid online when booking the appointment and non-refundable. Optional courier or other extras are paid in cash in PKR. Please re-check the fee position on the day you book, as it is the area most likely to change after the July revision.
Documents for a Japan tourist or family-visit visa
Requirements are set by the Embassy and published as a checklist by the application centre. For a typical tourist or visiting-relatives application you should prepare:
- A valid Pakistani passport and the signed Japan visa application form, printed on one side of the paper.
- One recent photo, 45mm × 45mm, on a light (preferably white) background.
- A day-by-day itinerary in Japan on the official MOFA format, with flight and hotel reservations.
- Bank statements and proof of income — salary slips and employer letter, or business registration and tax records for self-employed applicants.
- For family or friend visits and business trips: an invitation letter and a letter of guarantee from the host in Japan, plus the host's residence documents, or company details for business visits.
All photocopies must be on A4 paper and arranged in the same order as the checklist. Documents in Urdu (for example a Nikah Nama or family registration certificate) need a proper English translation — see our guide to certified translation services and the wider visa documentation guide.
Processing time and refusals
The Embassy's standard processing time is at least six working days from submission when the file is complete; the centre quotes around 5–10 working days in practice. Some cases need closer examination and can take several weeks or even months, so apply well ahead of your travel dates. Visas are never issued on the same day.
If a Japan visa is refused, the Embassy does not give a reason, and a new application for the same purpose can generally only be made after six months. That makes getting the first file right far more important than with many other countries.

A temporary visitor visa allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism, family visits or business meetings — it does not permit paid work.
