Japan Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Visa for Pakistanis 2026: Tests, Sectors & Process

Published July 17, 2026 ยท by Hijrat โ€” visa consultants, Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Japan’s ageing workforce has opened a genuine, legal work route for Pakistanis: the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa. It rewards a real trade skill plus basic Japanese, covers 16 industries, and can lead to long-term stay. Pakistan is on Japan’s list of eligible countries, so here is how it works in 2026.

What is the SSW visa?

Created to fill labour shortages, the SSW comes in two tiers. SSW Type 1 lets you work for up to five years in total in a designated sector, but you cannot bring your family and must be backed by a registered support organisation. SSW Type 2 is for higher-skilled workers: it can be renewed indefinitely and allows you to bring family โ€” though only some sectors currently offer it.

The 16 sectors

SSW covers care work, building cleaning, industrial manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding and marine industry, automobile maintenance, aviation, accommodation, road transport, railways, agriculture, fisheries, food and beverage manufacturing, food service, forestry and the wood industry.

The two tests you must pass

For Type 1 you generally must pass two exams: a Japanese-language test โ€” either the JFT-Basic or JLPT level N4 โ€” and a sector-specific skills evaluation test. Most skills tests are booked through the Prometric platform and run at various times through the year. If you have already completed the relevant Technical Intern Training, you may be exempt from these tests.

The process, step by step

  1. Pick a sector and study. Choose your field and prepare for both the language and the skills test.
  2. Pass the tests. Clear the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 and your sector skills exam.
  3. Find an employer. Sign a contract with a Japanese employer that accepts SSW workers.
  4. Support & COE. A registered support organisation assists you, and the employer obtains a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
  5. Visa & travel. Apply for the SSW visa at the Japanese Embassy with your COE, then fly out.

Fees and honest expectations

Official test and visa costs are modest, but budget for exam fees, Japanese-language classes, document translation and travel. Places depend on employers and test availability, and the language bar is real โ€” plan for several months of serious study before you are ready. Compare it with other skilled routes such as our guide to the South Korea EPS visa.

Immigration rules change frequently, and every decision rests with the Government of Japan and its Immigration Services Agency โ€” not with Hijrat. Sector lists, tests and stay limits quoted here are based on 2026 information and can change without notice. Always confirm the latest requirements on the official SSW portal (ssw.go.jp) and with the Embassy of Japan before you pay for any test or service.
