Hungary Work Visa from Pakistan in 2026: Guest Worker Route Closed, What Is Still Open
Pakistani workers looking at Central Europe have been asking one question all summer: is the Hungary work visa still open? The short answer is that Hungary has closed its headline guest worker route to new applicants, but employment-based permits and the EU Blue Card remain available to Pakistanis who have a genuine Hungarian job offer.
What changed in June 2026
Under Government Decree No. 92/2026, Hungary stopped accepting new applications for the guest worker residence permit from 6 June 2026. Reporting on the change notes that no third country currently sits on the eligible list, so in practice the category is dormant rather than merely restricted. Permits already issued continue until they expire, but they carry a two-year maximum and do not lead to permanent residence.
Pakistan was never on the guest worker list
This matters less for Pakistani applicants than headlines suggest. Before the June decree, Hungary limited guest worker permits to nationals of ten countries โ including the Philippines, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Georgia and Brazil. Pakistan was not among them. If an agent has been selling you a Hungarian "guest worker" job letter for a Pakistani passport, treat it as a serious warning sign and verify the employer independently before paying anything.
Routes still open to Pakistani applicants
Three categories remain realistic. The employment-purpose permit (often called the single permit) is the mainstream route: you need a Hungarian employer, a signed contract, and the immigration authority consults the labour office during processing. The EU Blue Card is for degree-holding professionals whose salary clears the Hungarian threshold โ widely reported at roughly HUF 1,001,048 (about EUR 2,800) per month in 2026 โ and it skips the labour market test. The White Card suits remote workers earning at least EUR 3,000 monthly from a non-Hungarian employer, and it does not permit local employment. Seasonal permits for agriculture and hospitality run up to six months in any twelve.
Fees and processing times
- National Type D visa or residence permit lodged at a Hungarian mission abroad: EUR 110, plus a handling fee of about EUR 25.
- Employment-purpose permit: roughly 45โ70 days, including the labour market test stage.
- EU Blue Card: roughly 30โ45 days, with no labour market test.
- End-to-end from job offer to visa in hand: most Pakistani applicants should budget 8โ12 weeks, sometimes closer to three months.
Fees are set in euro and collected in local currency at the prevailing rate, so the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate. Confirm the exact figure on the day you pay.
Where and how Pakistanis apply
The Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad handles Type D long-stay visa and residence permit applications, and applications can be lodged up to three months before your intended travel date. Consular charges are paid into a designated UBL branch using a deposit slip issued by the visa officer. Hungary also uses the Enter Hungary online portal for permit categories, and your employer will usually initiate that side of the process.
Documents to prepare in Pakistan
Expect to produce a valid passport, the employment contract, proof of qualifications, accommodation evidence, health insurance and a police character certificate. Degrees and other public documents normally need HEC, IBCC and MOFA attestation before a foreign mission will accept them, and non-English documents need certified translation. Our honest read
Hungary is tightening, not opening. For a Pakistani applicant without a degree-level profile or a verified Hungarian employer, the realistic European options in 2026 sit elsewhere. If you do have a genuine offer, the employment permit and Blue Card routes still work โ but build your file carefully, because the labour market test and document checks are where most files fail.
