Bulgaria Work Visa from Pakistan 2026: Single Permit, Type D Visa, Fees and Timeline

Published September 6, 2026 ยท by Hijrat โ€” visa consultants, Islamabad & Rawalpindi

Bulgaria has quietly become one of the more realistic European work destinations for Pakistani applicants. Since it completed its entry into the Schengen Area, a Bulgarian long-stay visa and residence card now carry the same free-movement benefits as any other Schengen state โ€” while wages, competition and employer expectations remain lower than in Germany or the Netherlands. Here is how the route actually works in 2026.

You cannot apply on your own โ€” the employer starts the process

Bulgaria has no job-seeker visa. Almost every Pakistani worker enters through the Single Permit for work and residence, and the first move belongs to a registered Bulgarian employer, not the applicant. The employer must advertise the vacancy locally for a mandatory labour market test (roughly 15 days) to show no Bulgarian or EU candidate is available, then file for permission with the Employment Agency and Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. Only once that approval exists can you apply for the visa.

There is also a legal ceiling on foreign staff: third-country nationals generally may not exceed about 20% of an employer's average headcount over the previous 12 months, rising to roughly 35% for small and medium enterprises. If an agent tells you they can place you with a company that has no such approval, treat it as a warning sign.

Type D visa, salary levels and the Blue Card option

With the labour approval in hand you apply for a Type D national long-stay visa at the Bulgarian Embassy in Islamabad (Diplomatic Enclave). The consular fee is around EUR 100. After arrival you have a short window to register with the Migration Directorate and collect the residence card that lets you live and work legally.

For skilled roles, the EU Blue Card is often the better path: it requires a higher-education qualification of at least three years and a contract of at least six months, with a gross salary threshold in the region of EUR 23,500 per year (roughly EUR 1,950โ€“2,050 a month, reviewed periodically against national wage data). Blue Card holders get faster family reunification and easier movement to other EU states later.

Seasonal work is a separate track. Stays of up to 90 days in agriculture, forestry, fishing, hotels and restaurants generally do not need a work permit; between 90 days and nine months you need a seasonal work permit plus a Type D visa. Advertised seasonal pay commonly falls around EUR 800โ€“1,100 net per month, often with accommodation or meals included โ€” verify this in writing in your contract rather than relying on a recruiter's promise.

Documents Pakistani applicants should prepare early

  1. Passport valid well beyond the intended stay, plus previous passports.
  2. Signed employment contract and the employer's labour approval reference.
  3. Educational degrees and experience letters โ€” attested and legalised for use abroad.
  4. Police character certificate and medical certificate.
  5. Health insurance covering the initial period, proof of accommodation and financial means.
  6. Certified English or Bulgarian translations of Urdu documents.

Workers proceeding on an employment visa must also complete Protector of Emigrants (BEOE) registration before departure. Skipping it can create problems at immigration and leaves you outside the state welfare protections available to registered overseas workers.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Budget two to four months from the employer filing to your first day at work: document preparation and the labour market test take two to four weeks, inter-institutional review another two to four weeks, the residence decision up to 60 days, and the Type D visa itself one to five weeks. Beyond the EUR 100 consular fee, plan for attestation, translation, medical, insurance and travel costs. Fees and salary thresholds are revised periodically, so confirm the current figures with the Embassy before you pay anything.

Is Bulgaria the right choice for you?

If you have a genuine job offer and modest salary expectations, Bulgaria is one of the more attainable Schengen work routes โ€” and after Schengen accession it also opens short trips across Europe, subject to the new EU entry-exit rules. If you are chasing higher wages, compare it against Poland and other Central European options before committing. Either way, the deciding factor is the same: a verifiable employer.
