For most Pakistani applicants, the US visa interview is short โ often just a few minutes โ but it decides everything. After you have paid the $185 MRV fee and completed the DS-160, good preparation is what turns a nervous applicant into an approved one. Here is how to get ready.
Many refusals trace back to a careless DS-160. Fill it in honestly and make sure every detail โ travel purpose, employment, family, previous travel โ matches your documents and what you will say in the interview. Inconsistencies between your form and your answers are a red flag, so review your confirmation page carefully before the appointment.
Officers usually ask simple, direct questions: Why are you travelling to the US? Who will you visit, or what business will you do? Who is paying for the trip? What do you do for work? Do you have family in the US? Answer clearly and briefly โ there is no need to volunteer long explanations. The officer is mainly judging whether your purpose is genuine and whether you have strong reasons to return to Pakistan.
Carry your passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter and MRV fee receipt, plus supporting evidence: proof of funds, employment or business documents, property or family ties, and anything that backs up your travel purpose (an invitation letter, conference details, or hospital appointment). Keep them organised so you can hand over anything requested without fumbling.
The single biggest factor for visitor visas is "nonimmigrant intent" โ convincing the officer you will come back. Stable employment or a running business, family responsibilities, property, and a clear, time-limited travel plan all help demonstrate that your life is rooted in Pakistan.
Do not memorise scripted speeches, exaggerate your finances, or carry fake documents โ officers are experienced and these backfire. Avoid vague answers, arriving late, or contradicting your DS-160. Dress neatly, be polite, stay calm, and if you do not understand a question, ask the officer to repeat it.
