Cyprus Work Visa for Pakistanis 2026: How the Employer-Sponsored Permit Works
Cyprus keeps appearing in the questions Pakistani job seekers send us, mostly because it is an EU member state with steady demand for workers. The route is real, but it works very differently from what many agents claim: in Cyprus the employer starts the process, not the worker. This guide explains the 2026 picture in plain terms.
Who applies: the employer, not you
A non-EU national cannot apply for a Cyprus work permit alone. A Cypriot employer files with the Department of Labour and the Civil Registry and Migration Department, and the permit is tied to that employer and job. For the general category, the employer must show through a labour market test that no suitable Cypriot, EU or lawfully resident worker is available, and pay must match what Cypriots earn in the same role.
Which sectors hire third-country workers
According to the Deputy Ministry for Migration, as reported in September 2026, general employment permits are used in areas such as agriculture, livestock farming, food delivery, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and other shortage occupations. Domestic work is a separate category. Official figures at the end of August 2026 showed around 26,700 valid general permits, so competition from other nationalities is considerable.
Three routes to know
- General employment permit: the standard employer-sponsored route described above.
- EU Blue Card: for highly skilled workers with a degree or about three years of relevant experience; law-firm guides quote a salary threshold near €43,632 a year, which is indicative and reviewed periodically.
- Companies of Foreign Interest: staff of registered foreign-interest firms, with a quoted minimum of about €2,500 gross a month, no labour market test and decisions often within 4 to 6 weeks.
Documents you should prepare
Expect to need a valid passport, a police character certificate, medical tests (such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and TB), health insurance, and Greek translations of foreign documents. Start early with a police character certificate and check whether your degrees need attestation. The employer supplies a Greek-language contract stamped by the Labour Department, proof of accommodation and a repatriation guarantee.
Fees and timing
Government fees are small: guides cite about €80 for the employer's permit and €70 for first-time employee registration. Medicals, translations and insurance add to this, so real costs are higher. General-route cases usually take several months; the EU's recast Single Permit rules point to a 90-day decision limit, but check how Cyprus applies it. After approval you collect an entry visa from the Cyprus consulate, register with the immigration unit and receive your residence permit. Permits can run up to four years and are tied to the job.
Avoid these mistakes
Never pay anyone for a “guaranteed” Cyprus visa before a named employer has filed an application. Ask for the employer's name and registration, and confirm the vacancy directly. Our visa services page lists the routes we can assess, and you can compare nearby options such as the Malta and Greece work visa guides.
