China Work & Study Visa for Pakistanis 2026: Z Visa, X Visa and How to Apply
China is one of the biggest destinations for Pakistani students and workers, from degree programmes to CPEC-linked jobs. In 2026 there is also a real cost advantage. Here is how the main China work and study visas work for Pakistanis, and what you need to apply.
Good news: the visa fee is waived
Pakistani passport holders are currently exempt from the Chinese visa fee — a waiver the Chinese Embassy lists as valid until 31 December 2026. In practice you still pay the service charge at the visa centre (Gerry’s), but not the government visa fee itself. Confirm the waiver is still in force before you apply, as such arrangements can change.
Study visa: X1 and X2
Students use the X visa. The X1 is for long courses over 180 days — bachelor’s, master’s or PhD — while the X2 covers short courses under 180 days. To apply you need an admission letter from a Chinese university and a JW201 or JW202 form, along with your academic documents.
Work visa: Z
The Z visa is for taking up employment in China. It generally requires a work permit notification arranged by your employer in China, after which you apply for the Z visa and complete residence formalities once you arrive. Because the employer sponsors the work permit, line up your job offer first.
Documents you will need
Prepare a passport valid for at least six months with blank visa pages, recent photographs to Chinese specifications, and — for most applicants — a Police Character Certificate, which you can obtain via a Police Khidmat Markaz or the ICTP app. Students add the admission letter and JW form; workers add the work-permit notification. Where documents are in Urdu, keep certified translations ready.
How to apply, step by step
- Secure your admission letter and JW form (students) or work-permit notification (workers).
- Complete the visa application form online through COVA.
- Book and submit your application in person at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (Gerry’s).
- Pay the service fee, provide biometrics if required, and collect your passport after processing.
Where to apply and how long it takes
The Chinese Embassy in Islamabad handles applicants from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and much of Punjab, while the Karachi consulate covers Sindh and Balochistan. The embassy generally needs about four working days for regular processing, though times vary if documents need to be supplemented or an interview is requested.
Tips and avoiding scams
Apply early — six to eight months ahead for study intakes — and never pay anyone “guaranteeing” a Chinese visa, as the decision rests with the Chinese authorities. For help preparing a complete, accurate application, see our visa services or contact our team.
Hijrat handles HEC, IBCC, MOFA and embassy attestation from our Aabpara office in Islamabad — serving Rawalpindi and overseas Pakistanis. Fees always itemised before you pay.
Visa categories, fee waivers, documents and processing times change and every decision rests with the Chinese authorities. The details here are general guidance as of July 2026 — always confirm current requirements with the Chinese Embassy or official visa centre before you apply.
