Canada Express Entry 2026: A Guide for Pakistani Applicants
For Pakistanis who want permanent residence in Canada rather than a temporary work permit, Express Entry is still the main federal route. But the system many applicants studied two or three years ago has changed substantially, and profiles built on the old assumptions are now scoring badly. Here is what the 2026 version of Express Entry actually looks like from Pakistan.
How Express Entry works
Express Entry is not a visa — it is a pool. You create an online profile, IRCC scores it under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and periodically invites the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence. Three federal programs feed the pool: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Most applicants from Pakistan, with no Canadian work history, enter through FSWP.
The big change: category-based draws
The single predictable cut-off score is gone. Through 2026 IRCC has run most rounds under occupational categories rather than drawing from the whole pool, with ten categories currently active — including French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades and education, plus newer streams for physicians, researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience.
The practical effect is that your occupation now matters as much as your score. General and CEC-aligned rounds in 2026 have sat around the low 500s, while category draws have cleared far lower: the first physicians draw in February 2026 issued invitations at a CRS of 169, and French-language rounds have repeatedly cleared in the high 300s. A candidate at CRS 450 may wait indefinitely in a general round and be invited within weeks in the right category.
One change hurt many Pakistani applicants directly: points for arranged employment were removed in March 2025. A job offer no longer adds 50 or 200 points to your CRS. Anyone still selling an “LMIA for CRS points” is selling something that no longer exists.
What you need before creating a profile
- A language test — IELTS General Training, CELPIP General or PTE Core. CLB 6 is the floor for FSWP; CLB 9 is where your score genuinely improves.
- An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) of your Pakistani degree from a designated body such as WES. Expect roughly four to eight weeks; an ECA is valid for five years.
- At least one year of continuous skilled work experience in the last ten years, documented with proper employment letters.
- A valid Pakistani passport, plus police character certificates and a medical exam once you are invited.

Fees and proof of funds in 2026
Federal fees rose on 30 April 2026. The principal applicant processing fee is now CA$990 and the Right of Permanent Residence Fee CA$600 — roughly CA$1,590 for a single applicant, plus CA$85 for biometrics. A spouse is charged at the same processing rate, and dependent children are CA$230 each.
FSWP and FSTP applicants must also show settlement funds; CEC candidates are exempt. For 2026 the single-applicant threshold sits at roughly CA$15,000, rising with family size to around CA$38,000 for a household of seven or more. The money must be liquid, unborrowed and free of debt, and your bank letter must show a six-month average balance — a lump sum deposited last week will be questioned.
Being realistic about your chances
Complete applications are processed in about six months after an invitation, but reaching an invitation can take much longer. If your occupation falls outside the 2026 categories and your CRS is below 500, a Provincial Nominee Program nomination — worth 600 points — is usually the more honest plan.
